Milkweed Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/31/2023

2-3 weeks ago I had noticed some nice looking milkweed plants while driving down a local street. Knowing that the blitz was coming up , I made a mental note and waited until today and went back, parked my car some distance away and walked to the site. When I cot there I found that all the plants had been decimated. Not only had the leaves been eaten but the umbels were pretty much destroyed. I found an article on nature.com which said that Japanese beetles will eat the umbels of milkweed. The damage to the leaves was not the damage of a Japanese beetle, but more like having been eaten by a caterpillar. However, I saw no signs of caterpillars nor chrysalises. The stem count was about 20 stems.
