Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/31/2023

Number: 5

We have 8 whorled milkweed plants and I spotted 5 larvae at the same time. There were the 2 in the image, plus one that is much larger (probably close to pupating), as well as two that are smaller than the ones in the image. The first part of last week was exceptionally hot and humid - upper 90s and heat index at 70-83 every day. After the heat broke, we've had cooler (mid 80s F for the highs) as well as several rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rain. I have seen at least one monarch adult every day in my backyard over the past 5 to 7 days, and at times, there have been 2 adults at once, swirling and chasing each other. I have also been counting eggs on these 8 milkweed plants. The highest number at once was 10 (last week) and now I only see one egg.
