While I’m on the larvae topic, I’ll admit I have saved a few eggs from being crushed along the sidewalk or pathway.
Today I put a couple of 3rd instars out on the single swamp milkweed plant in the garden and on a potted narrowleaf out in the back yard. No eggs laid back there yet this year that I could find.
So these are definitely captive reared - protected for over a week. I want to see how that goes. There are plenty of predators all through my garden. We’ll see what happens.
