Milkweed Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/06/2023

This is a picture of our grove of a mix of the common milkweed and Joe Pye weed plants that we have been growing for a few years now as a haven for monarchs. I counted 51 milkweed plants in this grove, however there are likely more covered up under the many Joe Pye weed plants. We have found about 6 monarch eggs, just 1 monarch caterpillar and one to two monarch adult butterflies at any one time flying around here and feeding on the Joe Pye weed plant flowers. Not very many monarch sightings so far. 1 to 2 adults at any one time in our yard, 2 to 3 at the most in our neighborhood and maybe 2 to 3 at the most at any one time at any one point in the city of Arcadia. Unfortunately those number ranges are more times than not on the low end of those ranges in our observation! We are hoping for more monarch observations.
