Milkweed Sighted

Date: 08/06/2023

either side of Fish Road are fields once cultivated for corn and hay. the 80 acres in two fields have been abandoned from cultivation since the harvest of 2018. we did not walk the fields to search for milkweed or monarch butterflies (private land), but from the roadside we estimated at least 5000 stems of common milkweed and perhaps several thousand more. the fields also supported an overstory of numerous grasses with flower on queen anne's lace, goldenrods, daisy fleabane, white sweet clover, and tansy. Canada thistle was releasing seeds. earlier in the season red and alsike clovers were evident. no woody shrubs are yet invading the fields except immediately at the margins. what a great location for monarchs if there were any to occupy the habitat. we did see one black swallowtail in a year of few butterflies anywhere locally.
