Sightings report image

Date: 07/29/2023

Number: 1

March 29th - Monarch individual m01, birthday, one day after egg found on fallen leaf. Pictured - Bottom: egg split at noon near the tip and the larva is nibbling away (leaf was getting crispy so it was misted with water in the morning), Middle: larva baby at 14:30 eating its egg case after crawling out and first eating some fibers off the leaf, notice the dark head cap and tiny jaws as well as edge of a fresh leaf carefully placed nearby but without touching the larva, Top: larva at 17:05 on top side of fresh leaf eating holes in the surface about the size of its head cap.

Rookie mistake(?): the first fresh replacement leaf was not rinsed off, sand, dirt and several tiny (much smaller than the larva, about the width of the smallest leaf veins) white mites or aphids were seen under magnification crawling on the leaf and at one point one hitched a ride on the larva's back. Subsequent leaves will be gently rinsed with fresh unchlorinated water.

[Note: Duplicate report on July 30th is an error.]
