In a 3 or 4 hour period in the afternoon and early evening, we saw a Monarch fly through a yard with no food for it; 2+ swallowtails flew through too. The Monarch appeared to be supergeneration.
Come to find out that the yard next door is lavishly landscaped with flowers. I peeked through a hole in the fence and saw lots of flowers, so there is food for butterflies. I did not see if there was any milkweed. But if the butterfly is supergeneration, it doesn't need to lay eggs in Illinois.
