This caterpillar came out of nowhere! I've been worried about the aphids and I've tried spraying them off with the hose, assuming a monarch wouldn't lay an egg with so many aphids on the milkweed. But there must have been an egg all along! I'm so excited! This is my very first monarch caterpillar! I just planted this purple milkweed in May.
