Rufous Hummingbird (female or immature male) nectars from nicotiana Saratoga Purple at 1438. It has been fending off six hummingbird rivals amidst the 90-degree heat. At least two Rufous and four Anna’s have been dueling, dive booming, and high-speed chasing each other for feeding rights on dahlias, feeders, lobelia Cardinalis, and salvia. A Rufous even chased a nuthatch through cedar tress like a Cooper’s hawk pursues songbirds. These hummers have been incredibly active in spite of the heat wave we’re having here in the Pacific Northwest.
