Sightings report image

Date: 08/06/2023

Number: 9

Less frequent but still regular ruby-throated hummingbird feeder visits continued this week, at least three adult males and at least six non-adult-males, very little conflict though dominant male defends feeder at times. Molt continues, still some loose feathers, bare patches and jagged looking individuals.

126ml average nectar consumption per day with erratic swings this past week, still very high but declined from peak in previous week the last days of July, 55ml low on Wednesday Aug. 2nd , and 255ml high on Friday Aug. 4th.

Pictured is a dominant adult male ruby-throated hummingbird from Friday August 4th, often seen wiping its beak from side to side like a chef sharpening a knife, defending the feeder and flew around for several hours so proud with a feather 'hood ornament' stuck upright on his beak, and it photo bombed an American kestrel which was hunting grasshoppers from the electric line as I tried to get a snapshot. The hummers sometimes fly to and hover over the kestrel(s) as if to assure it they're aware of its presence. Also, a shed fuzzy gift found later stuck on the feeder.
