Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 08/22/2023

Number: 3

Three female hummingbirds were chasing each other for feeder access. Lots of zooming, swooping, chattering. This was the largest bird and the other two seemed thinner or younger. They have taken nectar from the plant pictured here called Hummingbird’s Lunch, a cuphea plant. When in bloom, they have also used my potted honeysuckle, lonicera sempervirens. I saw them the most active between 5:15 and 6:00pm today. I use a flat feeder with a strong and clear ratio of 1/3 sugar to cup of filtered and boiled water for migration time. I also leave fruit in a potted plant below to attract small insects for them. I have been providing this feeder for at least 10 years. My property has been pesticide and lawn fertilizer free for five years and I am gradually increasing the presence of native plants while reducing lawn. I have not seen a male hummingbird in a few weeks now so I suspect he has left.
