Sightings report image

Date: 08/09/2023

Number: 1

Individual m01 (top image), day thirteen since finding egg on July 28th, at lunchtime the larva is a big instar four of 25mm long, needs a fresh leaf and to be transferred to a crawling container with twigs for its coming instar five.

(Bottom images) Items mostly found from recycle bin, washed and made makeshift rearing containers and stem holders. Today made new jar/twigs/stem holder/floor, rinsed a fresh leaf (5th leaf), and early evening transferred larva (hiding in a pill bottle, ready to molt) to the crawling jar. Jar is perfect minimum size for one larva and tall enough for large common milkweed leaves, 35oz, 7 inches tall, with wide mouth top vented with punched holes (holes punched from inside out to protect larva from sharp edges). A piece of paper towel is stuffed into the red cap and drenched with water to serve as the base and stem holder at the bottom of the jar helping to keep the leaves fresh, with the plastic disc as a floor/barrier then covered with a piece of dry paper towel to catch frass.

Room temperature ranged from 74F to 80F.
