Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/22/2023

Number: 1

Apologize for the quality—cellphone—but wanted to keep enough distance that both the “Super Generation”Monarch & the hummingbird could be seen nectaring on the white Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) which is highly fragrant—smells like honey.
The recently-emerged Monarch had been seen in its final Caterpillar stage approximately 3 weeks earlier—the 4th of 4 seen to emerge (never found any well-hidden Chrysali).
Noting that both the bloom and the emergence are far earlier this year than in previous years recorded at this location.
In past years, these bloom times & emergent Super Gen caterpillars and Monarchs were seen & photographed in September-October, with a 21-day incubation period.
Hoping that perhaps there might be one more flush of arriving Monarchs to Cape Cod?
While these amazing creatures are indeed intrepid, there was an intense rainstorm that followed this sighting, massive enough that it extended over Long Island, NY over the next few days.
I will try to see if other contributors have seen the amassing of Super Gen Monarchs pass through, and when 🤞🏼
