Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers

Date: 08/30/2023

Number: 20

We still have at least 20 Rubies with us. As I've stated before, that's a conservative estimate. We feel there are more, based on daily observations, but it's just so hard to give an exact number. We have 11 feeders and many gardens full of hummingbird/pollinator flowers (mix of perennials and annuals) located throughout our property, which is just under an acre. It has been a very hot summer here, with more days than not reaching 90 degrees. Rainfall has been decent. We've had dry spells, but not nearly as bad as other parts of the country.

While many flowers have faded or are in the process of doing so, others are simply workhorses and still performing strongly. Our hummingbirds and other pollinators are currently feeding on many different varieties of Salvia, Cuphea vermillionaire (they are not fond of other Cuphea varieties), porterweed, Shrimp plant, lots of butterfly bushes, Gartenmeister fuchsia, lantana, Agastache, Tithonia, Tourenia, 4 o'clocks, 2nd round of Bee Balm, Major Wheeler's honeysuckle, Nasturtium, Lobelia (although fading), Joe Pye weed (mainly bees and butterflies), Dicliptera, 2nd round of Obedient plant, Mexican Petunias, firecracker bush (Hamelia patens), and Jewelweed (which is just now beginning to flower here).
