This summer I have only seen one monarch butterfly in our meadow in the hills outside of Chester, Vermont, which is untreated and has hundreds of thriving milkweed plants. As of9/1/2023, I have not found a single egg or monarch caterpillar in the meadow where in addition to the milkweed there are abundant wildflowers. Only a few tussock moth caterpillars have availed themselves of the abundant milkweed. Although I have seen many fritillaries all summer, it has been a sad year for monarchs here…
