Monarch, Captive-Reared

Date: 09/02/2023

Number: 34

I gather wild eggs from milkweed in my suburban yard and neighboring fields, raise the larvae and chrysalids in tents outdoors and release the butterflies. This year I have so far released 34 healthy monarchs, with 10 still in chrysalis and 1 larva. I have not seen any more eggs for the last two weeks. Mating behavior is over for the last several weeks, and this migrating generation is slightly larger ( in wingspan and size) than previous generations this summer. So far there have been only 4 fatalities out of 34 this year, no major disease outbreaks. Overall a healthy year although numbers are down to half of what previous years have yielded.
Buen viaje, mariposas!
