Monarch Waystation #271 reports sighting a female monarch flying in both front and back beds from 10:39 to 10:45 am today laying eggs on young purple and swamp milkweeds. Photo shows her with a fresh egg deposited under a swamp milkweed leaf in the back bed. She looks newly emerged, a strong flier, in good health. She was first seen nectaring out my front window on orange Tithonia, meticulously going through the whole flower head, flicking her wings at any approaching hummingbird or bee to fend them off. After her fill, she made flights to lay eggs on milkweeds, then came back to nectar at the front bed flowers of Tithonia, yellow zinnias and Rudbeckia hirta.
