Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/05/2023

Number: 1

One adult Monarch seen for a few afternoon hours on Monday, September 4th, 2023. It was seen hovering over and feeding on nectar from the Verbena flowers. I used to see hundreds at this time of year, but now...just a couple. I believe this is due in large part to the destruction of the Oyamel forests in Mexico for their lumber and for the massive planting of avocado farms. We can help monarchs as much as possible here in the United States and Canada with milkweed, but if they have no where to fly to for the winter, our efforts are in vain. The weak government of Mexico is to blame and we can't do anything about it but plead for their help. The peso is worth more than butterflies.
