Sightings report image

Date: 09/05/2023

Number: 12

There is a baby boom! The "missing females" last week were busy feeding their about-to-fledge nestlings it seems. This week there are at least 7 fledglings resting on Sedum, Dwarf asters and other clumping perennials below conifers/Japanese maples. They can hardly fly. Mothers are feeding them now and then. But they are nectaring from the flowers on plants they are sitting on and making small flights (2-3ft high). Resident hummingbirds leave our garden by October 2nd. The number 12 doesn't include these non-flying baby birds. The fledgling in the photo just made its longest flight - 4ft to a dead Boltonia bush which provides perfect camouflage.
