Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers
Sightings report image

Date: 09/14/2023

Number: 3

One of three rubythroats in right center photo nectaring on potted 'Lime Sizzler' Hamelia at 7:15 a m. It was overcast after last nights rain until noon. Other two males are staying with inground compact yellow, orange, and Fiery red Hamelias.

It has been tough having to replace dead salvia this summer three times. Putting potted plants in plastic pots, then putting them inside clay pots. This method has helped being double potted tremendously in high heat index for 3 months. You can see how in photo. Some males are finding Black and blue, purple gurantica budding barely . Our porterweeds just don't bloom at all and should be at this time.

Our return rubythroats just don't go to any hibiscus like our Snow queen, or Angel earrings Begonia hanging basket, that I see in reports. Rubythroats seem to like all varieties of Hamelias the best in our climate.

There are a lot of male rubythriats today zooming around still outback, on driveway, front feeders. Where also inground Hamelias in flower beds that feeders are hung in. This seems to attract hummingbirds year round.

I do depend on purple gurantica varieties for Rufous overwintering. These plants may not regain blossoms for Rufous this fall.
