Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/17/2023

Number: 4

I observed some ruby-throats exhibiting a behavior that I've never seen before. Two of them were hovering, facing each other, almost touching and were performing a kind of dance. they would move up about a foot, then down about a foot, then sideways. Then they would repeat, not necessarily in that order. Once they sank almost to the ground, then rose again. They did this for about ten minutes, then flew off. During their "dance" another hummer snuck in and fed from the nearby sugar water feeder several times. After the first two hummers left, he continued to visit the feeder until a fourth hummer flew up. Then those two proceeded to perform the same actions as the first pair of hummers, only they only did so for a couple of minutes before flying off. I wish I had had a camera with me so that I could have filmed these performances!
