Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/14/2023

Number: 1

during our customary evening walk a large, plump hummer came directly toward us and passed 10 feet or less slightly above our heads and to our left. we thought the bird too big to be a ruby-throated hummer. we had no good view of color in the fading evening light (1830 hrs) which seemed even darker due to heavy clouds. the hummer was traveling north to south across an open mowed meadow along the western shore of Kennebec River. we are still searching for a good description of rufous hummer flight sound compared to ruby-throat flight sound, but so far we think the deeper pitch from this bird may indicate a rufous hummingbird. rufous hummers are infrequent in Maine occurring usually only spring and fall during migrations.
