Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/20/2023

Number: 7

The count of ruby-throated hummingbirds remained at 7 today. Juveniles have backfilled the adults. There were 3 immature males but 1 left sometime today. The rest are juveniles of unknown sex. This is the first year there seems to have been a fairly clear transition from adults to juveniles. So tomorrow there will be at least one less ruby-throat. Like the adults these ruby-throats focus on the black-and-blue salvias, and cigar flowers, but hungrily check out red lantana, purple agastache, verbena, purple salvia, and even nasturtium blossoms. At the end of the evening they tank up at the nectar feeders. Many battles over the flowers. Today was sunny with a high of 80°. Quitting time has really moved up to 7:23 p.m. central time. Things are winding down quickly now!
