This monarch is nectaring from a firecracker plant on my patio

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/27/2023]:

None of the monarchs were involved in directional flying. They were nectaring, mostly from the milkweed in 3 different gardens, but also on firecracker plant, purple coneflowers and red Showstopper roses. When not nectaring, they fluttered through the gardens, often, gliding low across the pool. Usually, they were alone, but occasionally, 2 would fly together for a short time.

I was home all day, going to the composter, working in the yard and sitting on patio.

I have not seen any monarchs mating, this season, although I did observe 3 Gulf fritillaries in the process. Eventually. the 2nd male left.

The monarchs in our area of coastal South Carolina are known for not migrating. I have had them in my garden year round. Many congregate at the old Coast guard station on Folly beach (about 7 miles away) during the winter.
