Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/24/2023

Number: 8

We still have 8-12 or so resident juveniles here with us. When we get down to these numbers at the end of the season, it's a really fun and sweet time. These individuals are the babies that fledged from 2nd nests. Our mama Rubies raise 2 clutches each here during the summer. So, these little ones are 6-8 weeks old at the most. They had it pretty rough when they first fledged as their new world around them was full of adult Rubies and older fledglings who weren't at all willing to share with these newbies. Anytime they attempted to feed from either the flowers or feeders, they were immediately chased away.

It's a different world for them now that all the adults and older juveniles have headed south. They've got plenty of insects, lots of nectar producing flowers spread all over the front, back, and side yards, as well as 10 fresh, clean feeders all to themselves. They are now playing and chasing much more so than fighting as there is ample food. They are also spending a lot of time perching, preening, and resting.

And what's so amazing is they are so curious about humans. Every year during this time, I thoroughly enjoy being out there with these sweeties. Each picks his or her favorite perch all around the yard and whenever I spend any time in their respective areas, they squeak and chirp at me and zoom right up to me and literally hang out with me. It's a magical experience. Because I'm able to "get to know them", these end of the season hummers always get named, which my 4 year old and husband always help out with. And when they return the following year, I'm often able to identify them based upon their behaviors, such as perching preferences. This is how I got to know all my favorites, including Sparky, Miss Shimmer, Sprite, Little Gem, Squeak, Piper, Maverick, Willow, Gidget, Fuchsia Pops, Percy, etc. What a tremendous blessing they are! Try to get to know your hummingbirds- I highly recommend it! ❤️
