Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/02/2023

Number: 2

Picture taken this Monday evening @ 6:17 pm.

At 7 am this morning here in Irving, TX, it was a nice and cool 71 degrees and the temp was 88 degrees at time the picture was taken. We have a good chance of rain come Wednesday.

I did not see any hummingbirds all day long until this evening and then I seen these two. I think the ones I had been seeing left and these are new comers. They were flying right by my face while chasing one another away from the Turks Cap flowers located next to my house and the park it located right outside my fence. The Turks Cap flowers are to the right, but not showing in the picture. There are two hummingbirds in this picture, one with it's tail feathers spread wide, probably the one doing the chasing at the that moment and then the other at the top of the picture. When they would decide to take a break from chasing one another, they'd go up into the Bald Cypress Trees located in the park. They must of been worn out from chasing one another or from just getting here from their flight heading south, because they just sat up in the tree and didn't fly away as I got closer and closer to get pictures of them. Most of the time they would fly to another spot in the tree when I'm aiming the camera at them.

Flowers available for our hummers are: Turks Cap, Tall Mexican Petunias, one group in my back and front yard, and I have the short Mexican Petunias on the front yard side of my house, Rose Mallow bush, hanging basket of red Petunias, pot of Red Pentas in a tall plant stand, vine with purple Clematis (not very many on the vine) some morning glories that have popped up on my fence, Garden Phlox, a Big Crepe Myrtle tree in my front yard. I have a Fire Bush that have lots of buds on it, some have opened up. The Fire Bush buds always open up @ the end of hummingbird season, I was told to give it plant food in early spring before you see any signs of the bush and then it would bloom sooner, I have to remember to do that.
