Our last 2 RT hummies flew out yesterday; one was a juvenile who was alone for several days, nectaring frequently, fattening up, and seemed to be waiting patiently for her mom to return, which she did yesterday; then the 2 were gone. We've seen this pattern in previous years. Have wondered if the mom flies south for some distance, as if ascertaining the path they'll follow, then returns to show her young which way to go? As with the past 30 years we've been 'hosting the hummies,' we were happy to see at least 3 full families of Ruby-Throats by the end of August (when the males flew away). We always hope these tiny winged wonders will successfully arrive at their southern destination, and that their habitat will still be there for their livelihood. Up here, we'll continue to do everything we can to keep our natural areas intact, so the RT's and all beautiful species who roam these forests, will still have a place to thrive.
