Hummingbird, Nectaring from Flowers
Sightings report image

Date: 10/05/2023

Number: 1

This beautiful little migrant appeared about 8:30 this morning. She stayed for about an hour and a half, meticulously working over a large bed of salvia coccinea before continuing her journey. As additional information, the last of our summer resident birds left October 1. A migrating juvenile male showed up on October 3, staying only long enough to nectar from the flowers twice. The bed where these flowers are is 20 by 8 feet. It’s a solid mass of salvia coccinea and has a shepherd’s hook holding a hummingbird feeder at each end of the bed. Neither migrating bird showed any interest in the feeders. They fed exclusively from the flowers, which are still blooming profusely.
