Total is conservative estimate over a couple of hours, does not count nectaring or roosting monarchs or non-directional flyers. (100's of those, too.)
At about 11:30 am monarchs were flying well-above above tree-top level over the open field in OKC Water Utilities Trust property southwest of Stars & Stripes Park at a rate of 30-40 per minute. Only a relatively small number of roosting monarchs took off south by 9 am, weather still misting and cloud-covered. Took dogs for slow walk in the field.
Noticing 2 or 3 migrators every few minutes for about 45 minutes starting at about 10:45(?) then things started picking up.
Sky was cloudy with patches of blue, temp about 68. I only counted the butterflies flying south above tree line or could never have seen the ones in the clouds. I think this just the beginning of the peak.
