Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/05/2023

Number: 8

Stopped again on my way home at the mostly Red Clover with Alfalfa field on Lions Club Rd. west of Myers Road on the north side of Lions Club where I had stopped at 11:00 earlier in the day. More activity now. Watched one fly south across Lions Club Rd. to a row of trees along a small stream bed. He roosted on the east side of a Mulberry tree with yellowing leaves. Using my binoculars, I located him and, to my surprise, also another individual both roosting in the same tree. Turned my attention to the field. Was able to locate six. One seemed to have a discolouration on its forewings. I would have loved to venture closer to get a photograph but I did not want to trespass. Time of observation: 14:15 to 14:35, observations with binoculars and naked eye. Overcast with the occasional spit of rain (rain storm arrived shortly thereafter.) Wind down to 22 km with gusts up to 32 km/h out of the SSW. Humidity 65%, dew point 16°C, barometric pressure 101.4 kilopascals and falling. Temperature approximately 21°C.
(Monarchs are excellent weather forecasters, seeking roosts as the storm approached; it started to pour quite heavily shortly after my observations. Fortunately, I used their clues and was able to bring my laundry inside before it got drenched.)
