Signs of Fall

Date: 10/09/2023

A sign of Autumn that I observe every year is the overnight gathering of the non-native House Sparrows in the trees on my property. Generally they choose the large Cottonwood immediately adjacent to the house. They roost between 4 feet from the ground up to 9 feet approximately. This year however, they have chosen the dogwood bushes that I have allowed to grow in my front garden just outside the front door. Some were scared off when I went outside but a few braver souls spent the night in the dogwoods approximately 4 to 7 feet off the ground. This is the first evening that they have gathered together. Overnight temperatures in the single digits. They usually continue this behaviour until all of the leaves have dropped from the tree. We will see what they do this year; if they will continue to rest in the dogwood or move to the Cottonwood.
