Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 10/15/2023

Number: 8

After I released 8 butterflies I'd reared in September, I thought my season was done. The following day, I had a surprise egg dump on my milkweed from an old tired female. 2 days later I caved and collected some eggs. It's been a race to the finish here, between milkweed ceasing growth and cold weather but today there are butterflies taking wing and riding the northeast wind south-southwest towards Mexico.
Weather: sunny, windy
Adults placed outside once the temperature rose to 53F. They oriented their dorsal surface south for wing exercises/basking. Once the temperature rose to 58F they all took flight south.
