Last three of the 11 caterpillars I raised from eggs laid 9/10/23. One male, two female.
Mesh hamper placed outside at dawn. 47F, clear. Butterflies took flight once it was warm enough.
Lab notes for this late cohort: 6 males, 5 females. Raised on common, swamp and purple milkweed in an unheated room. Cuttings were washed and placed in floral tubes held in test tube racks for sanitation. Milkweed was past prime. The larvae avoided yellowed or spotted leaf parts but consumed swamp milkweed that had turned red and purple. Pupation for all chrysalises lasted 13 days - long, but nominal. Eclose slow due to temps, followed by long rest period to fully deploy wings but all appeared healthy and anxious to fly.
