Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/20/2023

Number: 1

I thought for sure the end of our ruby-throated hummer season was over. Didn't see anything all day until 4:25 p.m. when I saw the immature male RTHB that has been staying around come to nectar at black-and-blue salvias. With the daytime temperature in the high 60s I imagine he had been perching most of the time in trees and picking off insects. I don't know if he just prefers black-and-blue salvias, cigar flowers, and pink salvia but he never uses the nectar feeders. Maybe he hasn't learned what they are. Quitting time was at 6:34 p.m. CDT. This fall migration season has gotten more unimaginable with each day. The recent days with a sighting of 2 or 3 hummers is a clear sign RTHBs are still streaming south from north of the Twin Cities in Minnesota.
