Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/26/2023

Number: 2

2 ruby-throated hummers observed here again today. Our juvie male is really good at keeping other hummers away. He had a spat with the second hummer (which is a new arrival today) near these black-and-blue salvias and cigar flowers. The new ruby-throat would do fly-bys to check to see if it was safe to nectar. As much as I love hummingbirds I'm praying for them to head south soon. They will have to leave by Saturday because we are supposed to have a sub-32° freeze. So our flowers will freeze. I saw one of the hummers around 5:00 p.m. CDT so I know at least one will be here overnight. The day was mostly rainy with a high of about 57°. Good luck to all the hummers still on the move. I'm amazed there haven't been reports north of us or in Iowa or Missouri. Maybe these stragglers make a straight shot to Mexico.
