In the late afternoon my husband saw a large, bright monarch butterfly flying past our house and then fluttering low over the pasture. This is the first "for sure" monarch we have seen since the end of May. So I went out looking hoping to see a monarch myself. Instead, I found a large 5th instar monarch caterpillar on a flowering milkweed plant. A lovely surprise! Which means at least one monarch has been here in September.
