This male monarch is sheltering in the leaves of the sweetgum tree in our front yard. Moments before, we had seen two bright butterflies near each other: this monarch checking on milkweed plants and the other a gulf fritillary nectaring on false garlic flowers. Then the overcast misty conditions turned to rain drops. The monarch flew around several trees, checking them out, then settled on this sweetgum to get through the coming stormy downpour. Over the course of the rest of the afternoon we got 3 inches of heavy rain. Much needed!
