Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 11/14/2023

Number: 1

This beautiful male monarch was born yesterday, but released today. He was brought in as a 5th instar caterpillar on 10/29/23. He formed his chrysalis on 11/1/23. I brought him in as a caterpillar because a hard freeze was about to occur here. Yesterday was cold and rainy, and I knew today would be warmer weather for him. Here he is at 12noon, 68 degrees F, cloudy, with 69% humidity, and very still. He is sunning (though cloudy) and getting his bearings while sitting on an Indian blanket wildflower (Gaillardia pulchella).
