As I walked in our backyard I startled this female monarch resting/sunning on some grapevines. She flew a short distance to this branch of a nearby tree, where she continued to gather sunlight on her wings to warm up on a chilly morning. It was 11:30am, 60 degrees F, sunny, with 48% humidity, and a light wind from the NE. She had very fresh wings and may have been a newborn from somewhere in the near area.
There are still some monarch caterpillars on native milkweed (Asclepias viridis) in our meadows.
