Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 11/26/2023

Number: 5

At 11:30am I checked on some of the monarch caterpillars that I have been observing in the last several days. It was sunny w/clouds, 53 degrees F, 57% humidity, with strong winds 16mph from the N/NW. I found 5 monarch caterpillars (2 5th instars, 3 4th instars) on the native milkweed (Asclepias viridis). Only about 10% of the milkweed is still available compared to spring/summer amounts, due to the normal cold fall temperatures. The monarch caterpillars I saw today were all actively munching and getting the best of the warm sunlight on a chilly day. I think this plump fellow is going to make his chrysalis very soon.
