Tulips PLANTED
Sightings report image

Date: 12/13/2023

Number: 70

This project was done with kindergarteners and preschoolers:

Prior to planting, when shown a bulb -what is this?
Student responses: "an onion", "a garlic", "a lightbulb", "a seed." One student knew it was a tulip bulb.

I explained to them that we plant this under the ground and in the spring it will grow and bloom (and showed them the picture.

How long will it take to bloom?
Responses: 1 week, 10 hundred weeks, 100 days (young children have a limited concept of time)

Kindergarteners learn about pumpkins and the life cycle so I told them just like pumpkin seeds sit under the ground and wait for spring to grow, these do the same thing. I told them we will keep observing until we see the green sprouts pop through the soil and bloom into pretty red tulips.

They had fun and felt very accomplished which was the most important outcome.
