We do not have an overwintering hummingbird this year, but we did have a juvenile male Rufous last winter from October 2022- late March 2023. We experienced some very cold temps here in this part of NC, with night time temps down as low as 4 degrees. I utilized heated feeders and they were literally and figuratively a lifesaver for our sweet hummer. He kept 2 out for him. We also used the old fashioned Christmas lights on our back patio and wrapped them around a very large potted Camellia near his feeder. I've seen lots of photos of other creative methods of folks keeping their hummingbirds warm, especially up in the Pacific NW, where they host overwintering Anna hummingbirds every year. I'll attach a photo of the heated hummingbird feeder I highly recommend, with the link to the company that sells them. Our Raphy, a juvenile male Rufous last winter, loved his heated feeders. This photo was taken on Christmas Eve at 7am, 4 degrees. The companies send them out immediately by priority mail. I'll post a couple other photos as well of methods used to help hummingbirds make it through intense cold snaps.
