Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 03/06/2024

Number: 2

This is a follow-up photo to my Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted) report of 03/06/24. This is a photo of a soon-to-be mated pair seen today. Shortly after this scene, they lifted off together and flew high towards the trees and woodlands.

The male monarch was the first I had seen of the season. He was zooming around for more than 30 minutes. I thought he was the only monarch in the area, because during that time he was the only one I saw over the many acres he traveled (me trying my best to get a photo of the speedy guy).

When a monarch flew to a yellow thistle, I thought he had finally decided to take a break. But it was a female monarch. She only nectared for about 30 seconds or so, before the male monarch spotted her (not like he hadn't been diligently looking).

A bit more excitement than usual for the first monarchs of the season.
