Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 04/05/2024

Number: 1

This is the first 5th instar monarch caterpillar I have seen this spring. Photo taken in bright morning sun while he is keeping a bit in the shade. Found on a tall Asclepias viridis milkweed with its flowering head drooped over. I continued to see this caterpillar for the next two days. He was healthy and eating the whole time ~ so may have been ready to form a chrysalis.
The other monarch larvae I am currently observing are from 1st to 4th instar size.
