Today I did a milkweed survey for monarch eggs and larvae in the late afternoon. I found 67 eggs and 41 larvae on 82 native milkweed plants (Asclepias viridis).

These are the monarch egg count results:

37 milkweed w/1 egg
9 milkweed w/2 eggs
4 milkweed w/3 eggs
Total: 67 monarch eggs

These are the monarch larvae count results:

1st instars: 23
2nd instars: 9
3rd instars: 5
4th instars: 2
5th instars: 2
Total: 41 monarch larvae

This is a photo of a 5th instar monarch caterpillar nibbling a milkweed leaf this afternoon, along with his smaller 3rd instar counterpart a bit higher up.
