This is the first photo in the state of Indiana of a male Ruby-throated hummingbird posted to Journey North in 2024. This photo was taken 4-18-2024. Our first siting this year of a hummingbird was on 04-15-2024. Amazingly, after a 1,300-mile trip he was just slightly ahead of schedule. Here are the dates of our 1st sighting of a Ruby Throated Hummingbird in Bloomington, Indiana for the last twelve years. We live 55 miles south of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In summary, the dates in April of our first sightings have been; 15th (2), 19th, 20th (3), 21st (3), 22nd (2) and 23rd. Over the previous 12 years the ‘average’ arrival date has been April 20. This year, to get ready for our first sighting, we put up our feeders on April 6th.
