Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/10/2024

Number: 1

I saw my first monarch butterfly at a local restored prairie. The monarch was close enough to identify as a male, but flew into the large floodwater basin before I could take a picture. I raise monarchs in my garden so I’m absolutely certain about this sighting. There are a few flowers around: winter cress, dame’s rocket, shooting star, viburnum, and a few dandelions.
This monarch went down into the grasses so may have been dining on minerals from the wet mud as it rained recently. The basin was too muddy and generally full of ticks for me to go after him for a photo.
