Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/22/2024

Number: 1

First Monarch of the season hovering among abundant dandelion blooms in the farmyard. Lilacs are still blooming and this is when we generally see the early travelers here. Have made some changes on this 400 acre homestead farm this year. Our 200 acres of native and restored grassland have been managed organically for over 25 years. Now our tillable acres will be regenerative organic going forward. The Monarch butterfly is in peril and needs extra protection as in the Endangered Species designation. We will do all we can here and invite anyone interested to study the Monarch on our farm. We had the largest fall roosts here in 2023 in the last 10 years. For some reason we had very good Monarch butterfly production here where other areas in North America did not. I attribute it to the native prairie and adjoining undisturbed grasslands.
