Barn Swallow (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/11/2024

Number: 4

We have had barn swallows in our barn for 35 years. They would always come around April 20.
This began to change a few years ago (about 5 yr) when they started to arrive later in the month and now, in the last two years, not until May.
The number of birds has also been dwindling. At the height of their population we would have up to 20 birds - each pair having two nestings.
But in the last 3-4 years we have had fewer & fewer birds & each pair nesting only once.
In 2023 just 4 birds arrived and one
was found dead in the barn a couple of
weeks after arrival. Again, there was only one nesting.
In 2024 on May 11, 4 swallows arrived. On May 18 we counted 7 !
We are quite excited !
