Robin (Nesting Behavior)

Date: 05/30/2024

Number: 3

I have noted strange (at least for me, I am by no means professional) behavior and I would like your comment on it.
On our balcony a pair of robins built a nest. 3 eggs were laid, 3 small robins hatched and left the nest several weeks ago. The same pair of adult robins laid another set of 3 eggs 2 weeks ago in the same nest. We went for a vacation and upon return yesterday we noticed THREE robins attending to the nest. It seems that one of them is one of the previous fledglings. It frequently sits in the nest (3 new babies has just hatched) and demands food from their mother. Just 10 minutes ago we found two of the hatchlings on the balcony floor: we think they might have been removed from the nest by either the mother or - more likely - by the fledgling. They were alive and I put them back in the nest. At the moment mother is sitting in the nest so they are temporarily safe.
We also noticed the fledgling chasing the father for food in the backyard. I seems that the fledgling wants to continue to be fed.
Have you ever observed anything like that??
